Monroe Police Reports: Crash investigation, eluding police, park warning

The Monroe Volunteer Fire Department shared these photos from the July 13 crash near the roundabout at the intersection of Routes 110 and 111 on its Facebook page.

MONROE, CT — Police released information Wednesday from their continuing investigation into the serious one-vehicle-crash near the roundabout at the intersection with routes 110 and 111 and St. Jude Catholic Church Sunday morning.

Officers responding to the crash at 4:16 a.m. on Sunday, July 13, observed a gray Chevrolet Trax that had traveled off the roadway, down a hill and onto St. Jude’s property.

Two occupants of the vehicle, a Shelton man and a Hamden woman, both 18, were still at the scene of the accident.

In a post on its Monroe Volunteer Fire Department, No. 1, Facebook page, firefighters said both occupants were treated by Monroe Volunteer Emergency Medical Service personnel. Police said the man reported no injuries, but the woman was taken to Bridgeport Hospital with what they suspect to be a serious injury.

Based on statements and evidence at the scene, police said the Chevrolet was traveling West on Route 110 when the SUV approached the roundabout, drove over the traffic island/median to its left, continued straight, went over the apron and center island, continuing to drive through the roundabout, while damaging multiple traffic signs.

The vehicle then drove over the curb, sidewalk and over a guardrail before coming to rest on St. Jude’s property.

Firefighters were on scene for over an hour to clean up a fluid spill in the catch basin and monitor any hazards, while the wrecker removed the damaged vehicle.

Driver eludes police, is cited later

A 23-year-old Ansonia man, who allegedly ignored a police officer’s lights and siren, instead speeding away on Monroe Turnpike on Sunday evening, now must answer for several motor vehicle violations.

At approximately 5:43 p.m., an officer observed a white 2005 Honda Accord heading south on Route 111 (Monroe Turnpike). A Connecticut Department of Motor Vehicles check found its registration had been suspended due to a lack of insurance, police said.

The officer drove behind the Honda and attempted to stop it at the Cross Hill Road and Route 111 intersection, activating his overhead lights and siren.

But instead of stopping, police said the driver continued south on Route 111 without attempting to slow down or pull over. Rather, he increased his speed in excess of 50 mph, according to the report.

Out of public safety concerns due to heavy traffic, the officer cut off pursuit and notified other law enforcement agencies, including Trumbull and State police.

A check of the license plate showed it was registered to an owner from Ansonia. The owner said his nephew was driving the car and he would have him contact the Monroe Police Department.

At 7:15 p.m., police said the driver, a 23-year-old Ansonia man, arrived at the station and admitted to being the one driving earlier. He said he didn’t stop, because he was scared and did not have a driver’s license, according to police.

He was issued a misdemeanor summons for operating a suspended vehicle, eluding the signal of a police officer, driving without insurance and operating without a driver’s license. He was released on a promise to appear in court on July 29.

Warned to stay out of Webb Mountain park

Police warned a Shelton man not to return to Webb Mountain after receiving an anonymous complaint on July 11, alleging a man with dark hair, who appeared to be in his 20s, was speeding through the park at 90 Old Fish House Road in a blue Honda Civic, and yelling at campers and people walking there.

Police tracked down the owner of the vehicle through the registration number and identified the driver. Officers warned him not to return to the park to avoid being subject to an arrest for trespassing.

The Monroe Parks and Recreation Department was notified of the incident. Police said a similar occurrence was reported a week before.
