MONROE, CT — A 45-year-old Danbury man who backed out of the Stevenson Volunteer Fire Department parking lot in his red Toyota Surpra Saturday night, nearly striking the passing vehicle of an off duty state trooper, who was driving on Monroe Turnpike with his family, was charged with DUI, according to police.
The state trooper got out of his vehicle and saw the Danbury man and his female passenger engaged in a heated argument, while standing outside the Toyota, so he called police, the report said.
Officers arriving on the scene around 7:50 p.m., said the man continued yelling at the woman when officers arrived and both appeared to be intoxicated. He also yelled at her when officers were talking to her, according to the report.
Officers noticed grass stuck to the lower front bumper of the Toyota, as well as damage to the lower right corner of the front bumper and the right side mirror.
Police said the driver was argumentative, but admitted to drinking alcohol. His eyes were bloodshot and droopy and he refused to perform field sobriety tests, the report said.
Based on the trooper’s statement and those involved, he was arrested for DUI. Police said he later refused to participate in breath tests at headquarters. He was released on seven percent of $500 bond for a July 14 court date.
Arrest in cooking oil theft
A 30-year-old Bridgeport man turned himself in on a warrant Friday afternoon, charging him for the theft of cooking oil from behind Mr. Mac’s Canteen, 838 Main St., that took place on May 17.
He was charged with sixth-degree larceny and conspiracy to commit sixth-degree larceny and released after posting seven percent of his $1,000 bond for a July 7 court date.
On May 17, an employee of Mr. Mac’s reported a theft in progress from the cooking oil container at the back of the restaurant around 8:30 a.m. The suspects, two men in a yellow Penske truck, left the scene before officers arrived, heading north on Route 25, toward Newtown.
The complainant managed to get the license plate number of the fleeing vehicle, which officers used to track down the rental agreement for the truck, helping them identify the Bridgeport man, whose Connecticut Department of Motor Vehicles’ photo matched surveillance footage from the theft, according to police.
Police are still investigating the case.
Evading incident under investigation
A 62-year-old Shelton man told police he stopped at a red light in the left turn lane on Main Street (Route 25) in his 2006 Acura Saturday night, when someone in a 2016 Ford F150 allegedly hit the back of his car, backed up, crashed into it again, then took off down Judd Road.
The Shelton man, who was not hurt, managed to get the registration of the fleeing vehicle, police said, adding his damaged car was towed.
The officer responding to the incident, reported around 10 p.m., tracked down the other driver. The case is still under investigation.
Police searching for evading driver
A woman told police the driver of a pickup truck, who rear-ended her 2013 Ford Escape when she stopped for traffic near the Starbucks’ entrance on Main Street Saturday afternoon, initially pulled over to the shoulder, but when she walked away to retrieve a damaged part of her Ford from the roadway, she said he fled the scene in his truck.
Officers were unable to find the fleeing pickup, which the victim described as gray or black. Anyone who witnessed the accident, which occurred around 4:41 p.m., is encouraged to call the Monroe Police Department at 203-261-3622.
Though the damaged Ford Escape did not have to be towed, police said its bumper fell off during the crash.
