Monroe police recover items in theft from Aubuchon Hardware store

MONROE, CT — Police detectives recovered a $400 drill set and $200 grinder at a pawn shop on Fairfield Avenue in Bridgeport Thursday night, after the power tools were reported stolen from Aubuchon Hardware store, 590 Main St., that afternoon.

At approximately 3:47 p.m., officers responded to the report of a theft at the hardware store.

Employees told them a dark colored vehicle backed into a parking spot by the front door, a woman got out, entered the store, walked to the power tool aisle, took the two items and ran out, jumping back into the waiting vehicle, whose driver sped off, heading south on Route 25.

An employee got a partial registration on the vehicle, a Nissan Armada, which detectives learned had been used in other thefts in area, including Westport and Fairfield.

Monroe detectives continue to investigate the case.

Warding off trespassers

Police slapped a 30-year-old Middletown man with a $92 fine for trespassing on the former property of the late, famous paranormal researchers Ed and Lorraine Warren early Wednesday morning.

The property and street is extensively marked with no trespassing signs, but people have come from all over the country to see the “Warren’s Occult Museum,” which was closed down in 2017, because the use does not comply with local zoning.

At approximately 12:41 a.m. Wednesday, a Knollwood Street resident called police to report a possible burglary at the Warren house. The dispatcher heard yelling in the background and the call was abruptly disconnected, according to police.

Officers arriving on the scene found two vehicles parked in the cul-de-sac and the occupants said they film TikTok videos of sites associated with paranormal activity and had come to film the “Warren Museum.”

Police determined no burglary took place, but cited the Middletown man for trespassing.

Long arm of the law

A minor shoplifting incident reported at Big Y supermarket on August 6, 2017 came to a conclusion nearly eight years later when Monroe police detectives served warrant to a 36-year-old Trumbull man at court in Bridgeport Wednesday morning.

He was charged with sixth-degree larceny, first-degree reckless endangerment and operating under suspension. He was turned over to marshals at court and held on $11,000 bond for the Monroe charges and unrelated charges.

He is currently in custody of the Connecticut Department of Corrections.

On August 6, 2017, officers responded to a shoplifting complaint at Big Y, 535 Monroe Turnpike, around 3:08 p.m.

A store manager told them the man allegedly stole $53 worth of Red Bull and snacks before leaving the store without paying.

Realizing he was spotted, he reportedly took off running out the door by the florist area and jumped into a green Nissan. Store managers chased him into the parking lot and tried to record the license plate, which police said was obscured by a piece of paper.

One manager ripped the paper off and got the plate, nearly being run over by the suspect in the process, police said, adding the manager jumped out of the way in time as the car raced out of the lot — almost hitting a customer.

Officers tracked down the plate and developed a suspect.
