Electric car knocks out power after crash on Main Street in Monroe

Eversource repairs a downed utility pole and wires on Main Street (Route 25), near Victoria Drive, Monday.

MONROE, CT — A 41-year-old Easton woman went off the road on Route 25 (Main Street) and crashed her Hyundai IONIQ 5 into a utility pole, taking down the pole and the wires late Monday morning.

A number of Eversource customers in the westside of town lost power, including Stepney Elementary School, according to police.

Eversource was able to restore power to the school and traffic was detoured for approximately an hour-and-45-minutes, until the power company cleared the pole and wires from the roadway, police said.

The driver and her passenger told officers they were not injured, according to the report.

The crash occurred near Victoria Drive around 11:51 a.m. when the woman was driving north on Main Street. Police said she told officers she was unsure what happened before she went off the right side of the road.

The driver was cited for failure to drive in the proper lane and her vehicle was towed due to disabling damage.

Garage burglary

An East Dale Drive man told police someone entered his garage and stole his 2019 Husqvarna 701 sometime overnight, according to a complaint made Saturday morning. Police said the owner had left the key in the ignition at the time of the theft.

The victim said he was selling his motorcycle, which is valued at $10,000, on Facebook Marketplace, but nobody had come to his home to look at the bike.

Detectives processed the scene for evidence and are investigating the case.

Truck vs. bicycle

A 17-year-old male from Monroe was driving a 2004 Chevy Silverado Friday evening, when he accidentally struck a 13-year-old male riding a bicycle at the intersection of Elm Street and Jays Road, according to police.

The juvenile did not fall, but his bike got stuck under the pickup truck, police said, adding the youth was evaluated by Monroe Volunteer Emergency Medical Service personnel at the scene and did not have to be transported to a hospital.

At approximately 5:44 p.m., police said the 17-year-old was driving south on Jays Road, stopped at the stop sign, at the intersection with Elm Street, then creeped forward for a better line of sight when he reportedly did not see the bicycle ride in front of his truck and struck it on the right side.

The bicycle was heading west on Elm Street, police said.

The driver was cited for disobeying a stop sign and violation of passenger restrictions and the juvenile was released to his parents.

Two-vehicle-crash

Officers responded to the report of a two-vehicle-crash, after a 2008 Mazda 3 struck a 2012 Subaru Forester in the intersection of Monroe Turnpike (Route 111) and Elm Street late Friday afternoon.

At approximately 4:08 p.m., police said a 22-year-old Monroe man heading south on Elm Street turned left at a green light, but did not yield to the Subaru Forester heading straight from the opposite direction.

He reportedly hit the Subaru in the left, rear fender. Police said the impact made the Subaru spin off the road and strike a fire hydrant, before coming to a stop.

The driver, a 65-year-old Shelton woman, was evaluated by EMS personnel at the scene and her vehicle was towed due to disabling damage, police said.

The Monroe man, who was not hurt, was issued a ticket for failure to grant the right of way.

Aquarion Water Co. was notified to repair the fire hydrant.
