Detectives investigate gun theft with a Monroe connection

MONROE, CT — Town detectives are working with law enforcement from Monroe County, Mich., to investigate the theft of a Browning 20-gauge shotgun reported stolen from the Great Lakes State 24 years ago.

On Saturday, the North Atlantic Sportsman, 600 Main St., which acquired the shotgun on consignment on July 31, called police after trying to sell the shotgun on Sunday. The Connecticut Special Licensing and Firearms Unit told the storeowner the firearm was reported stolen out of Monroe County in August of 2000.

Monroe police seized the shotgun as evidence and notified Monroe County detectives to discuss its origin.

Power lines ensnare medical van

MONROE, CT — Power lines came down onto a hospital transport van traveling in the 130-block of Hattertown Road, trapping two occupants inside, as Tropical Storm Debby blew through town Friday evening.

Firefighters and police responded to the call, in which there were no injuries, according to the report.

Some homeowners in the area lost power after Eversource shut it down at the intersections of Route 25 and Green Street and routes 25 and 59, so emergency responders could free the vehicle, according to police.

Officers detoured traffic down Indian Ledge and Wintergreen roads and the roadway was blocked at Knapp Street.

Police said most Eversource customers in the area had their power restored within 45 minutes, though others were still out during the storm.
