MONROE, CT — A 47-year-old Shelton man was taken to St. Vincent’s Medical Center for treatment of injuries after running over a stop sign on Barn Hill Road with his Nissan Frontier, going into the woods and hitting a tree near East Village Road Thursday morning.
Police said he was heading north on Barn Hill when the crash occurred around 11:28 a.m.
Monroe Volunteer Emergency Medical Service personnel evaluated the driver at the scene before taking him to the hospital and town firefighters responded to the call for fluid leaks. The damaged vehicle was towed.
Arrest in Rite Aid theft
A Brooklyn, N.Y., man known for thefts from Rite Aid pharmacy locations in Connecticut, New Jersey, Rhode Island and Pennsylvania was arrested on a Monroe warrant Wednesday for his alleged involvement in a theft at one of the town’s stores on July 18, 2022.
Police investigating the case identified him as a suspect with assistance from Rite Aid Loss Prevention and the warrant was served at the Department of Corrections, where he was being held on unrelated charges.
The 50-year-old Brooklyn man was charged with criminal liability for the acts of another to commit larceny in a sixth-degree larceny and arraigned at Superior Court. He remains in custody of the Department of Corrections.
On July 18, 2022, he allegedly distracted the clerk at Rite Aid, while a Black female went into the allergy medication aisle and stole $383 worth of over-the-counter medication, police said.
Crosstrek hits building
A man backed his gray Subaru Crosstrek into a parking space in front of Healthy Food Chinese Kitchen, 650 Main St., late Tuesday morning and got his order. As he was about to drive off, he told officers he thought the vehicle was shifted into drive, when it was actually in reverse.
When he accelerated his Subaru went backwards, jumping the curb and striking the building.
Police said the exterior wall was pushed inward, as well as the window, but the driver and those inside the business did not report any injuries.
The Monroe Health Department and building inspector were called to the scene and decided to stop business at the restaurant, while repairs were made, police said.
The accident occurred around 11:44 a.m.
Thief on video
An Oakwood Drive resident told police unlocked vehicles were entered in his driveway at 3:27 a.m. on Tuesday, though nothing appeared to be taken.
Police said Ring camera footage shows a White male who appears to be in his late teens or early 20s entering a vehicle.
Fraudulent Verizon account
A fraudulent Verizon account was opened using a 32-year-old Monroe man’s Social Security number in 2016 and the victim didn’t know about it, until this year.
By that time, police said the account had a $2,400 balance that went to collections after Verizon closed it for non-payment in 2019. Police said the victim learned about it when it went onto his credit report.
He filed the police report on Monday.
Amazon driver hits garage door
An Amazon driver parked in the driveway of a Moss Road residence Monday night and walked to the back of the van to retrieve a package, when the vehicle rolled forward and hit the garage door, denting it, police said.
Then the driver reportedly got back into his truck, backed up in the driveway, got out and delivered the package.
Police said the homeowner noticed the damage when he went outside to retrieve the package. He stopped the Amazon driver, who allegedly tried to leave the scene of the accident without telling him about it.
Then the homeowner called police to report the accident.
Two-vehicle-crash
A 74-year-old Windsor woman turned left onto Route 110 from Old Tannery Road in her Hyundai Ioniq to head west toward Route 111, before a 17-year-old Monroe male driving a Honda Accord struck her vehicle from behind Wednesday, according to police.
Police said the Hyundai sustained heavy damage to its entire rear bumper and the Honda had heavy damage to its front bumper, disabling damage and airbag deployment from the impact.
The Monroe teen reportedly told officers the driver of the Hyundai cut him off. However, a witness told police the Hyundai established a lane of travel facing west on Route 110 before it was rear-ended by the Honda, according to the report.
The Monroe male was found to be at fault and was issued a verbal warning for failure to drive a reasonable distance apart from a motor vehicle resulting in an accident.
The crash occurred around 4:47 p.m.
