Monroe Police: Water heater stolen from construction site on Chipotle property

MONROE, CT — A $2,500 water heater was reported stolen from the construction site, where a commercial building housing a Chipotle, Wayback Burgers and Jersey Mike’s is being built at 375 Spring Hill Road, according to a complaint Monday.

The site manager, a 24-year-old Harwinton man, told officers the Navien water heater was delivered on Aug. 18 and he received a photograph as confirmation at 1 p.m., when he was not onsite. Then two hours later, a Chipotle employee called to inform him the water heater was missing.

Police said the water heater had been left in an unlocked storage room in the rear of the building.

On Monday, the manager returned to the site and checked the camera system, but discovered he was missing several days of footage, including the time the water heater went missing, according to the report.

He told officers multiple crews were working onsite the day the heater was taken and no one recalled seeing suspicious activity or anyone who may be responsible for the theft.

The incident is under investigation.

Scaring off a thief

A North Hillside Lane resident told police he saw someone get out of a red Camry and check car doors in his neighborhood around 1:15 a.m. Tuesday morning.

After he reportedly yelled from a window of his home, the suspect got back into the car and it took off, heading south toward Sunset Hill Drive.

Officers checked the areas of Settlers Farm, Quarry Ridge and Barn Hill, but could not find the Camry.

Juvenile issues

A McDonald’s employee called police to complain about vehicles with a large group of juveniles causing issues outside the restaurant at 390 Monroe Turnpike around 9:30 p.m. Thursday.

Employees locked the doors, so no one could enter the building before calling police. But the youths had already left by the time officers arrived.

Unemployment benefits scam

Police received a complaint Tuesday from a resident victimized by a scam, in which someone fraudulently applied for unemployment benefits from the Connecticut Department of Labor using their names and information.

All the victims were advised to contact the three major credit bureaus, to monitor their financial accounts and to report the incidents to the Labor Department and the Social Security Administration.
