MONROE, CT — Police are investigating two instances of mail theft, in which residents saw two suspects in a newer model silver Honda Civic with New York plates Monday. Both incidents occurred during the day.

At 11:42 a.m., a 21-year-old Flint Ridge Road man told police his mother had just put a check in the mailbox and raised the flag before leaving the house, when he saw two Black males pull up in a Honda Civic.

One of the men, who wore a black hoodie, stole the mail before the vehicle took off, police said. The resident told officers the Honda had a white and blue New York registration plate in the back.

The victim called M&T Bank to report the incident and cancel the stolen check, police said.

Then at 4:54 p.m., police received a report of a theft of mail on Longview Road. A neighbor reported seeing a silver Honda Civic with New York plates stop in front of a mailbox. The passenger, a Black male in a hoodie, reached out of the front passenger window and stole mail from the mailbox, police said.

Then the vehicle sped off toward Meadows End Road, police said.

The victim, an 86-year-old Longview Road woman, told officers she placed four checks in her mailbox earlier in the day for $575.66, $68.20, $26.62 and $26.62 and left the flag up for the postal worker.

After her neighbor told her about the theft, she checked her mailbox and only saw incoming mail.

She contacted Webster Bank to report the stolen checks and has incurred no financial loss at this time. The bank froze her checking account, will transfer her funds to a separate account, and advised her to report any fraudulent activity on her account to police.

Mail theft has become more common and police recommend sending outgoing mail, especially with cash or checks, from a Postal center or a U.S. Postal Service mailbox, rather than the one at your home.
