Police: Stolen card buys $2,600 worth of beer, cigarettes, vape cartridges

Suspect extradited from Nassau County Correctional Facility

MONROE, CT — A Baldwin, N.Y., man who allegedly used a stolen credit card to purchase close to $2,600 worth of cigarettes, beer and vape cartridges from FM One Stop, 447 Monroe Turnpike, on December 19, 2022, was extradited from Nassau County Correctional Facility and arrested on a Monroe warrant Thursday.

Officers drove to East Meadow, N.Y., to pick up Kenny Cesaire, 30, of 839 Center Drive, and bring him to the Monroe Police Department, where he was charged with third-degree larceny, third-degree identity theft, receipt from illegal use of a credit card and criminal impersonation. He was released on $5,000 bond for a March 24 court date.

On Dec. 19, 2022, Cesaire and another man allegedly used a credit card that was reported stolen out of Illinois, to make $2,596 worth of purchases at FM One Stop numerous times throughout the day, according to police, who said there was only enough evidence to charge Cesaire for the crime.

Thief withdraws $3k from account

A 49-year-old New Haven man told police an identity thief impersonating him withdrew $3,000 from his account at the Connex Credit Union branch on Main Street in Monroe Tuesday.

The victim discovered the theft Thursday, when he was doing online banking and noticed the withdrawal police said.

Connex told him the suspect went to their branch at 155 Main St. and used the victim’s Social Security number, address and a fake I.D. to make the withdrawal. Then the bank gave him a $3,000 check.

Police said the victim has since closed the account and contacted all of the major credit bureaus. It is unknown whether he will be reimbursed at this time, as Connex investigates the incident. Police are also investigating the theft.

Yankee fan strikes again?

A description of the suspect and vehicle involved in the shoplifting of $164 worth of disposable razor blades from Rite Aid pharmacy, 435 Main St., Thursday afternoon is similar to eyewitness accounts of incidents at the Rite Aid and Walgreens stores on Monroe Turnpike last week, according to police.

At 2:35 p.m. on Thursday, officers responded to the report of a larceny at the Rite Aid on Main Street and spoke to the manager, who told them a man wearing gray sweatpants, a red hoodie with the hood covering a baseball cap, and a blue surgical mask over his face, stole three large packages of disposable razor blades.

He then got into the passenger side of a dark blue or green Toyota Camry, which drove off.

Video surveillance footage showed the driver backed into a parking space facing the store, before the theft. As the car drove away, the only recognizable image was two Yankees baseball caps in the rear window, according to police.

Police said the vehicle appeared to have a Connecticut license plate, but the numbers were not clear enough to read in the video.

Theft from a Jeep

An Old Tannery Road woman, 25, reported the theft of her purse from her Jeep Grand Cherokee on Monday morning. The theft occurred sometime overnight, while the vehicle was parked in front of the victim’s home.

Police said she told officers the Jeep was locked, adding she still has the key and does not know how it was entered.

The gray handbag, with an estimated value of $800, had a $250 wallet, $25 cash, credit cards and numerous forms of identification, including the victim’s Social Security card, according to the report.

Police said the Jeep was parked at 11 p.m. the night before and a family member left for work at 5 a.m. the next day and did not notice anything unusual.

The victim told officers she did not hear any noise overnight. No video surveillance footage of the incident was available, police said.

A Good Samaritan

A police officer observed a man standing in the middle of the road, picking up items on Route 111 Tuesday afternoon. When the officer spoke to him, the man, 54, told him he found a black leather wallet.

The officer took the wallet to headquarters where the driver’s license was used to contact the owner, a 73-year-old Trumbull man who told police he was on his way to the Big Y in Monroe, when he lost his wallet.

Police said nothing was missing from inside the wallet, which contained identification, credit cards and $56 in cash.
