Open house starts off National Fire Prevention Week in Monroe

Fire engines are always popular for children at the Monroe Volunteer Fire Department's open house. Stepney and Stevenson fire companies also showcased their vehicles Sunday.

MONROE, CT — Fire engines, a rescue boat and an ATV were among the vehicles firefighters from the Monroe, Stepney and Stevenson volunteer fire companies had on display in the parking lot of the firehouse at the corner of Route 110 and Moose Hill Road Sunday.

Families took their children to the open house on the first day of National Fire Prevention Week. The event, which was held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., also featured table displays of firefighting equipment, fire safety pamphlets, crayons and coloring books inside the open truck bays.

Children received toy fire helmets and badges and ate cupcakes and popcorn. Town firefighters will participate in events throughout the month, including fire safety visits to schools and a Trick or Trunk event at Masuk on Oct. 22.
