MONROE, CT — It has been a nice start for the Masuk High girls soccer team. Not only in terms of wins and losses but effort and approach. The Panthers gave new Coach Kate Pellegrino a win in her first game, a 2-1 edging of visiting Bethel on Sept. 8.
Samantha Dube and Brianna Van Derheyden had the Panther goals.
Masuk sustained some losses within the win.
“It was a hard-fought, physical game,” said Pellegrino, noting that the Panthers sustained a trio of injuries in the matchup.
Then came a 2-1 setback to Fairfield Ludlowe, also at home, on Saturday morning. Despite the loss, Pellegrino was pleased with the effort.
Trailing 2-0 late in the second half, the Panthers applied pressure and finally cashed in when Grace Sheehan blasted a 35 yard free kick into the bottom left corner of the goal with about 10 minutes to play.
Alyssa Iannucci dribbled deep into the right corner to attempt to set up the game tying tally, but Ludlowe’s defense denied.
“I’m still happy about this one. We held our own,” Pellegrino said. “We don’t make it easy for anyone.”
