MONROE, CT — Since the season opener, it has been a tough spring for Masuk High softball team opponents. The Panthers, after a 2-0 setback to Fairfield Ludlowe back on April 2, have reeled off 17 unanswered wins, most by lopsided scores and many in five-inning, run-rule fashion.
This past week saw Masuk defeat Weston 17-1, Southington 6-0 and Pomperaug 13-0, all at home.
In the win over Pomperaug, on May 11, the Panthers jumped out to an 8-0 lead after one inning of play. Kathryn Gallant and Julia Bacoulis combined to pitch the Panthers to victory with Gallant striking out 11 and Bacoulis fanning another batter in the combined one-hitter.
Natalie Lieto went 3-for-4 with two homeruns, a single, and four RBI. Ella Bunovsky went 2-for-3 with two singles and an RBI. Sofia Lieto went 2-for-2 with two singles and two RBI. Kat Gallant went 2-for-3 with two singles and two driven in. Emma West-Testo and Izzy Viglione each had doubles and Sarah Falcone and Ava Moretti both singled.
Masuk may be in for one of its toughest tests of the campaign in a scheduled Monday, May 16, visit to Newtown at 4:30 p.m. Newtown heads into its final three games against South-West Conference foes unbeaten in SWC play. Masuk’s regular season concludes Thursday, May 19, when FCIAC opponent Staples visits at 4.
