MONROE, CT — When the Giving Tree program was short by 119 Christmas gifts for Monroe families in need, just one day before the deadline, Mary Ann Kalm, the town’s social services coordinator, grew concerned many would go without presents under their tree this year.
Kalm got the word out Tuesday and extended the deadline from Wednesday to Sunday, but there was such a positive response from townspeople that the extension wasn’t necessary. Boxes at the Monroe Police Department and Edith Wheeler Memorial Library soon filled up with wrapped gifts as new donations rolled in.
“Thanks to the generosity of the Monroe community, we will be able to provide gifts to all residents who signed up!” Kalm told The Sun in an email Thursday.
