MONROE, CT — Meegan Conetta-Garrity, a kindergarten teacher at Stepney Elementary School, received the 2023 Weller Excellence in Teaching Award in recognition of her innovative project, “Sap to Syrup at Stepney School”, which connected students with nature on the Stepney campus.

The project involved younger students co-creating an informational piece on “How-To Tap a Tree”, while older students revised and updated the video for the community. These students have been part of the Stepney sugaring tradition since kindergarten and are now ready to inspire future generations.

The Weller Excellence in Teaching Award (formerly The Weller Outstanding Teacher Award) program was introduced to the Monroe public school system in 1992. The award recognizes the teaching quality and innovation exhibited by classroom teachers of grades k to 5.

The goal is to encourage teaching excellence for area youth.

As recipient of this award, Conetta-Garrity was presented with a $1,000 award and a certificate of honor.
