Voters to decide fate of $96.7 million town budget proposal Tuesday

A sign on the Route 111 green reminds voters of Monroe's May 3 town budget referendum.

MONROE, CT — Voters will go to the polls this Tuesday to decide on a $96.7 million town budget proposal carrying a projected 1.38 percent tax increase.

If the budget passes at referendum, the mill rate would increase from 36.36 to 36.86 mills. Individual tax bills can be calculated by multiplying one’s assessed property value by the mill rate and then dividing by 1,000.

The Board of Finance sets the new mill rate after voters adopt a new town budget.

The town budget proposal includes $31.7 million in municipal spending, a 0.57 percent increase over the current budget. Education spending would rise from $61,521,068 to $64,440,666 for a 4.75 percent increase.
