MONROE, CT — Compliance checks of smoke shops by town police detectives and state agencies led to fines for alleged sales to underage customers at A&W Smoke Shop, 150 Main St., and Area 51 Smoke Shop, 525 Main St., according to a press release issued by police Wednesday.
Police said A&W Smoke Shop also had several THC products for sale, including vapes and edibles, which were found in plain view. All of the merchandize reportedly weighed a total of 14.3 pounds.
The A&W employee accused of selling to someone under age 21, a 31-year-old Brooklyn man, was issued an infraction for possession with intent to sell less-than-8-ounces of marijuana. He was also issued a $300 infraction for sale of a vape product to a minor.
All of the illegal THC products were seized and the case is still under investigation, police said.
Compliance checks were performed on Oct. 25 with help from the Department of Consumer Protection’s Drug Control Division, and the Department of Labor and the Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services.
Later that day, a compliance check led to an undercover buy of nicotine products at Area 51 Smoke Shop, police said, adding a check of the business showed it was in compliance with state law in regards to the products for sale.
The 23-year-old employee was issued a $300 infraction for sale of a vape product to a minor.
“It should be noted that there are no smoke shops in Monroe that possess the proper license to sell cannabis or THC products,” Lt. Kevin McKellick said.
