Panthers skate into state semifinal contest

MIDDLETOWN, CT — Masuk High’s hockey team, the top seed in the bracket, skated to a 2-1 victory over No. 9 Hall in the Division III State Tournament quarterfinals, at Wesleyan University, on Thursday, March 9.

After a scoreless first period, Drew Scalia scored with assists from Nick Kondub and Colin Deering for a 1-0 lead in the middle stanza. Nick Kondub scored a power play goal later in the period. The tally was assisted by Deering and Austin Braiewa.

Owen Miller scored Hall’s goal late in the second but Masuk held on with a scoreless third period as Maddex LaFountain had 17 saves in net. Shots on goal were 32-18 in favor of Masuk.

With the win, the Panthers advance to the state semifinals versus No. 4 Conard at Quinnipiac University on Monday, March 13, at 7 p.m.

The winner advances to the Thursday, March 16, championship game, also at Quinnipiac, at 7 p.m. No. 3 Newington and No. 15 Rocky Hill meet in the other semifinal matchup.
