Masuk tops Conard 3-1 in semifinals

HAMDEN, CT — Masuk High’s hockey team is three periods away from a state championship. The Panthers, the top seed in the Division III bracket, defeated No. 4 Conard 3-1 in the semifinals at Quinnipiac University’s M&T Bank Arena on Monday.

In the semifinal, Conard opened the scoring in the first period before the Panthers netted three in a row. Drew Scalia scored unassisted to tie things.

Luke Kondub was assisted by Austin Braiewa and Scalia for a 2-1 lead in the second period. Scalia added his second of the game, also in the middle stanza, set up by Braiewa and Alex May.

Masuk goaltender Maddex LaFountain made 14 saves in the win.

With the win, the Panthers will take on No. 3 Newington for the state championship, in at Quinnipiac, on Monday, March 20. Postponement of other playoff games due to Tuesday’s snowstorm pushed back the schedule; the D-III title game was originally slated for Thursday, March 16.
