MONROE, Conn. — The Monroe Senior Center, 235 Cutlers Farm Road, offers numerous programs, events and meetings with support groups every month. Some are highlighted below. For membership information, click here.

A Presentation on Ageism

Art Gottlieb, LCSW, CSA, will give a presentation on ageism on Friday, Feb. 27, at 1:30 p.m. Many people’s response to being around senior citizens is based upon assumptions and typecasts that typify shallow analysis. This program will discuss methods of surviving within a culture that celebrates youth and condescends to seniors and the attending insults of ageism.

A Caregiver Support Group

A Caregiver Support Group will meet at 3 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 27, at 3 p.m.

Caring for a loved one can take a toll on people, affecting their mental and physical health. Join Art Gottleib, LCSW, CSA, for this session held in the center’s library, where you can open up and express your feelings and frustrations and receive nonjudgemental advice and suggestions.

The session is free for anyone age 60 and older or who is caring for someone 60 and over. No membership is needed.

Line Dancing

Line Dancing will be offered at the Monroe Senior Center on Tuesdays from 3 to 4 p.m., starting this March. This program is free with your membership. Visit the front desk to sign up.

Stress Management Workshop

Deborah Buckley, MA applied psychology, will lead a Stress Management Workshop at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 24.

Explore the good, bad and ugly effects of stress and how to identify triggers and your stress response. A variety of easy strategies to manage and cope with stressful situations will be introduced that can be applied to all aspects of life: work, family and social.

Dress casual and get ready to relax. Signups are in the Monroe Senior Center lobby.

A Bereavement Group

A Bereavement Group meets at the Monroe Senior Center every Wednesday at 2 p.m. Those interested in participating should call the center at 203-452-2815. No membership is required.

The group will offer a safe compassionate and supportive environment for those grieving the loss of a loved one. It will offer the opportunity to connect with others who have suffered loss, as well as to gain an understanding of the complex emotions that may be experienced during the grieving process.

The group will be facilitated by Joan Joyce, MS, NCC LPC, CSA. Joyce is a licensed professional counselor in the state of Connecticut, as well as a national certified counselor and a certified senior advisor.
