MONROE, Conn. — Monroe Public Schools’ annual Celebration of Reading was held on Monday morning amid a celebration of the 250th birthday of the United States.
Sponsored by The Rotary Club of Monroe, each of the district’s 75 K-5 classrooms received a new children’s book that was read to them by local volunteers. Readers included State Rep. Tony Scott (R-Monroe), First Selectman Terry Rooney, Board of Education members, local business owners, retired and current teachers and administrators, and many others.
This year all of the books focused on the founding of our nation and the important historical figures and events that shaped our democracy. Director of Instruction Mike Crowley, Elementary Instructional Leader for ELA Kara Tanner, and the K-5 Reading Team reviewed a large group of books to ensure a great selection of titles for the students.
In addition to sharing these children’s stories, readers explained to their assigned classrooms their different roles in our community and how important reading is to their success. This wonderful event highlighted both the town’s commitment to literacy and the importance of celebrating all the men and women who have built this nation.
