MK Permanent Makeup brings European beauty to Main Street

Start

Kathryn Derekhovych earned a Master’s degree in art in Ukraine, before working in the beauty industry after emigrating to the U.S. in 2013. Derekhovych is now a licensed permanent makeup artist in the state of Connecticut. She worked at a studio in Orange for the past year before opening her own business, MK Permanent Makeup, in Monroe on May 6.

“We’re trying to bring some European beauty here,” she said during a recent interview. “My goal is to make women happy, to make them beautiful.”

Derekhovych strives to bring symmetry to her clients’ faces from their eyebrows to their lips.

Derekhovych and her husband, Ivan Bodner, have two children, a daughter, age 7, and a son, age 12.

Her father, Ihor Meniv, who was in the military most of his life, died just before the war with Russia broke out and her mother, Natalia, escaped from Ukraine to the U.S. after the fighting started. But most of Derekhovych’s family, including her brother, are still there.

MK Permanent Makeup’s studio is on the second floor of the commercial building at 600 Main St. The “M” comes from Derekhovych’s father’s last name and the “K” from Derekhovych’s first name.

The permanent makeup lasts for about a year-and-a-half, Derekhovych said. Her services include: eyeliner, powder brows, shadow tender eyeliner, lips neutralization, tiny tattoo, and eyebrow lamination.

If a woman loses color in her lips, Derekhovych said she can do a lipstick color or restore her client’s natural lip color.

She can draw permanent eyebrows on women who lose their eyebrows during chemo treatments after they’ve recovered from cancer. “I offer 20 percent off for women who lost their eyebrows during chemo and fully recovered,” Derekhovych said.

MK Permanent Makeup offers something for every woman.

“Imagine not having to fix your eyebrows every morning,” Derekhovych said. “Imagine not having to spend as much time on your makeup in the morning, and always looking beautiful after sleeping or going into a pool. Your makeup stays the same.”

MK Permanent Makeup also offers permanent makeup classes, which are typically three days a week over the course of one month.
