Masuk softball team rolls into state semifinals

MONROE, CT — Masuk High’s softball team, the No. 4 seed in the Class L State Tournament, is headed to the semifinals. Masuk will take on No. 9 Ellington at neutral site West Haven High today (Monday) at 4 p.m.

The Panthers won a pair of home games in earlier rounds after a bye to start the state bracket. Masuk blanked No. 13 Waterford 7-0 in the second round on May 31, then defeated No. 5 Windsor in the quarterfinals on June 2.

Against Waterford, Julia Bacoulis did it all to lead the Panthers, throwing a three-hitter with 11 strikeouts and four walks. Bacoulis registered her 250th career strikeout. At the plate she went 2-for-3 with a single, double and two runs batted in.

Izzy Viglione had a double and drove in a pair of runs. Alyssa Castillo had a double and RBI, Madison Aguirre doubled, and Natalie Lieto, Sofia Lieto and Ella Bunovsky all hit singles.

In the 5-3 win over Windsor, Bacoulis allowed four hits and struck out 13, walking two. Grace Ely was 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles and two runs batted in. Aguirre doubled, Sofia Lieto singled, drove in a run and scored twice, Viglione singled and had an RBI and Bacoulis singled.
