Masuk girls lose scoring touch in defeat to New Milford

Bailey Bajda and the Panthers will look to bounce back from Tuesday's defeat to New Milford when they host Stratford Friday at 7 p.m.

MONROE, CT — After piling up 17 first-quarter points and seizing a double-digit lead things certainly were looking good for the Masuk High girls basketball team on Tuesday night. But visiting New Milford’s sold defense, combined with some Panther shooting woes, added up to a 31-28 loss for Masuk on its home court.

The Panthers were up 17-7 after one quarter and held a 23-15 halftime lead but were limited to just five points in the second half. The two-time South-West Conference Champion Green Wave battled to its sixth win in eight SWC games thus far. Masuk fell to 4-4 in conference play.

Masuk went up a dozen when Abby Troesser scored the first points of the second quarter. New Milford got the deficit down to eight before Bailey Bajda drove to the hoop and reinstated the double-digit cushion. Maddie Farrer’s offensive rebound and put-back made it 23-13 late in the opening half. New Milford scored in the final seconds of the second quarter and took over after the break.

Peyton Webb makes a pass against the New Milford defense.

Grace Sheppard had nine points, all in the opening quarter — including a pair of 3-pointers. Bajda had six points, all coming in the first half.

Masuk sits in eighth place in the conference standings, but only two wins out of second. There are a trio of teams each with three wins on the Panthers’ heels as the regular season winds down and teams compete for one of the top eight SWC positions and a playoff berth. Masuk will host one of those teams, Stratford, this Friday at 7 p.m.

The remainder of Masuk’s SWC schedule is mixed bag and includes first-place and seven-win Pomperaug of Southbury, along with five-win Joel Barlow of Redding, but also one-win Weston and winless Bunnell of Stratford.
