MONROE, CT — The Masuk High track and field team is gearing up for its season opener, Monday, April 8, at New Milford at 4 p.m.

Coach Terry Tyler and company have hopes to improve on their seventh-place finish in the South-West Conference and also score some more points in the State Class MM meet.

Only 9 points in total were scored over the last two years at the state, all by current senior captain Tristan Smith.

“Smith is the most accomplished athlete on the team, a threat to win both state and SWC titles, and will lead the shot put and discus events,” Tyler said.

Tristan Smith is a record-setting shot putter for Masuk.

Other throwers expected to contribute include javelin throwers Henry and Liam Whalen, and Alex Malecki, Alex Tiago, Justin Cannone, Daniel Balestriere and Daniel Gomes, who are keys in shot put and discus, Tyler added.

The sprint group is led by senior captains Chris Fox, Colin Valle and Ethan Palmich. Junior brothers Shane and Gavin Walker are expected to provide big points and will be major competitors in both of the sprint relays. Freshman Tanner Walker and junior Will Brewster also look to contribute.

The distance events will be led by freshmen Sebastian Riera in the 1600 and 3200 events and Brayden Hershberger in the 800 and 1600 events.  Junior Sean Panella will run the 300 hurdles and looks to be a threat to score at both the SWC and State Championships.
