Masuk baseball team set for playoffs

First baseman Greg Nivison takes a throw as a base runner gets back.

MONROE, CT — The Masuk High baseball team concluded the regular season with a 3-2 loss to visiting Newtown Tuesday, but the No. 8 seed Panthers will soon get back to game action in the South-West Conference playoffs, when they visit top seed New Fairfield in the quarterfinals on Sunday, May 21, at 4 p.m.

Masuk showed plenty of fight in the Newtown game, nearly overcoming a 3-0 deficit.

The Panthers left the bases loaded in both the second and third innings, before getting on the scoreboard in the fourth when Cody Benegoss doubled home a run. But he was tagged out at third base while hustling to stretch the hit into a triple.

Masuk threatened again in the sixth with a pair of base runners, but could not inch closer until the last of the seventh.

Drew Scalia singled to center with one out in the final frame. Tobey Bajda pinch ran and moved up to second base on a ground out. Carson Falcone delivered a two-out RBI single, but the Panthers left the tying run on base.

The Panthers defeated Pomperaug 9-3 on May 10 and won eight regular season games and lost four contests by a single run.
