Land Rover thief dumps child safety seats, license plates in downtown Shelton

MONROE, CT — A 61-year-old Shelton woman reported her white 2018 Land Rover Discovery stolen from the Village Square parking lot, 401 Monroe Turnpike, on March 7.

At approximately 12:43 p.m., she told officers she had parked her vehicle at 8 a.m. and went into a business, then later went out to lunch with a friend. Her Land Rover was still in the parking spot when they left.

Police said the vehicle was unlocked with the victim’s purse inside. The purse contained her keys, credit cards, driver’s license and cash, according to the report.

At around 12:15 p.m., the victim received a phone call from the Shelton Police Department asking if she had dumped the two child safety seats from her backseat and her license plates onto Howe Avenue in downtown Shelton.

At the time, she was unaware her vehicle was stolen. She called Monroe police to report the theft and canceled her credit cards.

Monroe police officers conducted checks of surveillance videos from businesses at the shopping center and are continuing to investigate the case.

Drive hits 3 mailboxes

Monroe police officers responded to the report of a man swerving in a blue Volvo on Moose Hill Road Wednesday afternoon, where he allegedly struck three mailboxes in the 300-block of the street.

As police responded around 12:34 p.m., the vehicle had turned right onto Route 110, heading toward Shelton.

Officers were unable to catch up with Volvo before it crossed into Shelton, where city police attempted to stop it. But the driver fled north on Route 8 and was not caught, according to the report.

Monroe police said scattered car parts left behind on Moose Hill confirmed the vehicle was a blue Volvo.

A two-vehicle-crash

Police responded to a two-vehicle-crash on Monroe Turnpike (Route 111), near the Trumbull town line, early Wednesday evening.

Officers’ investigation determined a 33-year-old Bridgeport woman was waiting to turn left from Aquarion Water Co.’s driveway around 5 p.m., when two drivers heading north stopped to allow her to pull out.

As her 2017 Toyota Prius cleared the two stopped vehicles, police said an Oxford man, 50, struck the driver’s side of her vehicle with his 2009 Ford Expedition in the north bound, left-turn-only lane, as he attempted to turn into the Town Line Plaza parking lot, according to the report.

The Bridgeport woman was evaluated by Monroe Volunteer Emergency Medical Service personnel, but declined a trip to a hospital. The Oxford driver did not report any injuries. Both vehicles were towed due to disabling damage.

The Bridgeport woman was cited for operating an unregistered vehicle, driving without insurance and failure to grant the right-of-way from a private driveway.
