Visitors to the First Selectman’s Office at Monroe Town Hall are greeted with a warm smile from secretary Alice McKane and when residents call, she is a friendly voice on the other end of the line. But after 14 years as a town employee, McKane worked her last day on Friday.
McKane, who started out in the Finance Department and served under five first selectmen going back to Karen Burnaska, enjoyed the flexible hours when her three children went to school.
“Now all my children are adults and I’m a grandmother,” McKane said, adding she is now looking for a full time job in the private sector.
McKane grew up in Monroe and had been a secretary in Bridgeport for seven years before working for the town. “I’ve always been organized,” she said. “It’s what I do best.”
She received a greeting card from her co-workers, who had a party for her in the conference room.
“I have a second family here,” McKane said. “I really bonded with all the people I worked with.”
