Divers make a splash and swimmers have season best times

Melody Sicherman had her season best time against in a meet against Weston on Oct. 1.

MONROE, CT — Masuk High’s girls’ swimming and diving team may have dropped a 102-75 decision to Weston on Oct. 1, but the Panthers made quite a splash, led by their divers.

Kate Wittenauer’s final score was a 205.05 for first place. Carly Jordan took third place with a score of 167.20 and Carrie Wittenauer took fourth place with a score of 165.60, qualifying her for the state championships.

Kate Wittenauer had already qualified for states and all four divers have qualified for the SWC championships.

Masuk’s divers had some stellar performances in previous meets, as follows:

Against St. Joseph:

First: Kate Wittenauer with a score of 192.10

Second: Carrie Wittenauer with a score of 177.65

Third: Siobhan Riordan with a score of 133.60

Exhibition: Carly Jordan with a score of 178.15

Against Pomperaug:

First: Kate Wittenauer with a score of 196.35

Second: Carrie Wittenauer with a score of 195.15

Third: Carly Jordan with a score of 170.95

Exhibition: Siobhan Riordan with a score of 132.05

“Masuk has a great group of divers this year,” said Jessica Konkol, the diving coach, adding that the Wittenauers, who are juniors, have been wonderful examples for the freshmen.

“All the girls have great attitudes and are hard workers,” she said. “Kate broke Masuk’s 6 dive record with a 226.75 last year and is expected to break it again before she graduates. I am excited to see what the rest of the season brings.”

Victoria Pallas had her season best time in a meet against Weston on Oct. 1.

The swimmers did a nice job in terms of personal times and a couple race wins against Weston. Eva Helmke won the 50 free with a time of 26.61, out-touching Weston by .03 and won the 100 back with a time of 1:07.96, out-touching Weston by over 3 seconds.

Masuk had 15 season best times against Weston.
