MONROE, CT — As the global coronavirus pandemic worsens, many residents are asking First Selectman Ken Kellogg for updates on the rollout of the vaccine.
On Monday, Kellogg released several options for residents to get updates on the situation:
- Visit the Town of Monroe COVID-19 page
- Sign up for e-mail updates at www.monroect.org/mailing-lists and check “Town of Monroe News & Announcements” (and then be sure to check that emails are not going to your “spam” folder)
- Town of Monroe Facebook page
- Updates are also sent to local media – TheMonroeSun.com
- Sign up for CodeRED phone updates on the town website
Since the start of the pandemic the first selectman has issued over 50 updates and continues to do so on a weekly basis.
A classic Craigslist scam
A Monroe woman advertising furniture on Craigslist for $910 received interest via an email and a text from a Florida area code. Then the buyer overpaid, sending her a $3,000 check.
Police said the man contacted her, asking her to cash the check and send him the $2,000 difference. She deposited the check and asked the bank if it was fraudulent. However, the bank told her it would take up to 90 days to verify, according to the report.
The man kept insisting she send him the money, but to a different address than what was displayed on the check.
At this point, she thought it was a scam and reported it to police on Jan. 5. Police said she did not send the man any money.
The Trailblaze Challenge
TRUMBULL — Make-A-Wish Connecticut, which creates life-changing wishes for children with critical illnesses throughout the state, including Monroe, is starting the New Year with The Trailblaze Challenge journey.
The Trailblaze Challenge is a 26.2-mile endurance hike scheduled for June 11-13, where participants tackle the terrain of Bear Mountain. Organizers emphasize this event is not a race, adding it caters to all levels, from novice to advanced outdoor enthusiasts.
Make-A-Wish Connecticut is offering free virtual information sessions with the first on Tuesday, Feb. 23. These sessions will also be offered on different days and times throughout the months of February and March. Visit trailblazechallengect.org to register.
To prepare for the hike, Make-A-Wish Connecticut will safely offer training and conditioning hikes beginning in March.
