The Save Our Stepney Task Force (SOS) will fill the Stepney Green with Marvelous Machines on Saturday from noon to 4 p.m. The rain date is Sunday.
Learn about the early tractors that were once the staple of every farm in Monroe. Monroe residents Myron Winninger and Kevin Barney, members of the Antique Machinery Association in Kent, and Kate Chase will bring an assortment and explain their use and function.
Kids can have fun in a bounce house and there will be a collection of unusual and curious gizmos and gadgets on display at the SOS “Can You Guess What This Is?” tent. Those with the most correct guesses as to what the items were used for will be entered in a raffle to win prize baskets filled with autumn goodies.
Popcorn, snacks and water will be available for purchase.
Athena, a barred owl will make an appearance with her handler Chris Clark, zoo educator/animal care director for the zoo, from 2 to 2:30 p.m., thanks to the Beardsley Zoological Society of Bridgeport. Clark will answer your questions about Athena and the many species of owls in Connecticut and their role in our urban and rural landscapes.
Blazin’ Pumpkins Illumination
As the sun sets on the Stepney Green Friday, the gazebo will glow with the second annual Blazin’ Pumpkins illumination. Carved pumpkins of all sizes and expressions will create a blazin’ ring of illumination around the gazebo.
Stepney Green is at the intersection of routes 25 and 59. The Blazing Pumpkins will be extinguished after Halloween. Members of the Save Our Stepney Task Force will build the core illumination.

Drug Take Back Day
The Monroe Police Department is participating in the Drug Enforcement Agency’s National Drug Take Back Day this Saturday.
From 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., people can dispose of expired and unwanted prescription drugs in a drop box in the lobby of the police station, 7 Fan Hill Road.
Police Det. Nicole Buckley said this excludes used needles and liquids, which could spill. She added the drop off box is in the lobby all the time.
Police will accept vape pens and cartridges without the batteries on Saturday only.
Studies found the majority of prescription drugs that are abused were obtained from family and friends, often in a medicine cabinet.
The Fall Binkathon
The Monroe-Trumbull chapter of the Binky Patrol is hosting its “National Make a Difference Day Binkathon” at Christ the King Church, 4700 Madison Ave. in Trumbull, on Saturday, from 11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
The event will be held in the Hall in the lower level of the church.
The Binkathon is a fun filled day in where folks of all ages and skill levels gather for a few hours to make as many binkies (blankets) as possible to be given to local agencies, shelters or hospitals to provide comfort to children.
