MONROE, Conn. — Firefighters contained a blaze to one room of a two-family house on Barn Hill Road Sunday afternoon. The resident was not home and a pet dog was crated, so firefighters brought the animal to safety during the emergency response.
“No civilians or firefighters were injured and fortunately the rescued dog appears to be doing well,” Monroe Fire Chief Kevin Catalano said in a post on the Monroe Volunteer Fire Department No. 1 Facebook page. “The cause appears accidental in nature and is under investigation by the fire marshal.”Though firefighters responding to the 4 p.m. call quickly extinguished the fire, Catalano said the room sustained heavy fire damage and the rest of the unit sustained significant smoke damage, leaving it uninhabitable.
However, he said the adjoining unit only sustained minimal smoke damage.
Crews remained on the scene for overhaul and ventilation for approximately 90 minutes, according to Catalano, who said the response included 30 volunteer firefighters from the Monroe, Stevenson and Stepney fire companies, who operated with fellow responders, including the Monroe Volunteer Emergency Medical Service and Monroe police officers.
Additional firefighters from Shelton and Trumbull responded, but were returned while enroute, Catalano said.
