Monroe Police Reports: Motorcycle crash, theft case leads to Wendy’s bathroom …

The Monroe Police Station shares the Monroe Town Hall building at 7 Fan Hill Road.

MONROE, Conn. — A 52-year-old Monroe man was taken to St. Vincent’s Medical Center with injuries after being involved in a motorcycle crash near the intersection of Wheeler Road and Thompson Street Sunday morning.

At approximately 8:34 a.m., police said the Monroe man was riding south on Wheeler Road on a 2014 Harley-Davidson before crossing the center line and entering the north bound lane for an unknown reason.

Meanwhile, a 32-year-old Shelton man, who was driving on Thompson Street in his 2018 Toyota Tacoma, turned right onto Wheeler Road and headed north.

He later told officers he stopped when he noticed the motorcycle coming right at him.

Police said the motorcycle struck the Tacoma on its driver-side corner, as the rider was ejected from his bike upon impact, landing on the pavement.

The Monroe man told officers he was unsure how the accident happened, police said, adding the other driver said he saw the motorcycle coming down the hill in the wrong lane.

The Monroe man was not wearing a helmet or any other protective gear, according to police, who was he was cited for failure to stay in the proper lane, driving an unregistered vehicle, driving an uninsured motorcycle, and operating a motorcycle without a motorcycle endorsement.

The Shelton driver was not found at fault for the accident.

Stolen wallet found in a Wendy’s bathroom

A stolen wallet found behind a garbage can inside the men’s room of a Wendy’s restaurant in New Haven helped police solve a theft reported at a residence at Pequot Court in Monroe four days earlier.

The case stems from a theft reported on April 23. A woman in charge of an estate sale at the Pequot Court residence told officers she placed her purse in the bathroom in the hallway.

A moving crew hired by the homeowner worked from 12:30 to 1:39 p.m. that day, hauling away items that were not for sale. After they left, the woman noticed her purse had been moved and her wallet was missing, according to the report. The wallet contained $400 cash and several credit cards, police said.

The victim believed one of the movers was responsible and police interviewed each of the three crew members separately, though all three denied any knowledge of the theft.

There was a break in the case on April 27, when the victim received a phone call from the manager of the Wendy’s, who said her wallet was found in the men’s bathroom. Police said everything was still in the wallet except for the $400 cash.

Detectives obtained a search warrant for Wendy’s surveillance video, which showed the three moving company employees entering the restaurant together on April 23, according to the report.

One of them, a 37-year-old Portland man, was seen entering the bathroom, so detectives interviewed him again. Police said he tried to blame one of his coworkers for the theft. However, since he was the one seen entering the bathroom, detectives applied for a warrant for his arrest.

He turned himself in on July 10, was charged with third-degree larceny, posted seven percent of his $1,000 bond, and was released to the custody of the Newington Police Department, which had its own case against him. He is scheduled to appear in court on July 17 for the Monroe charge.

A rash of vehicles entered

Thieves targeting cars in a driveway on Hattertown Road came up empty Friday when the doors were locked, but later that morning police received more reports of vehicles being entered overnight.

The first call was received just before 2 a.m. A homeowner in the 400-block of Hattertown Road turned on lights, scaring off a thief and driver. Officers responding to the call could not find the suspects’ sedan, which was last seen heading toward Newtown.

At 8:11 a.m., someone reported a laptop and tools stolen from an unlocked vehicle in the 200-block of Hattertown Road. Then at 9:41 a.m. police responded to a report of two unlocked vehicles entered in the 100-block of Stanley Road, though nothing was stolen either vehicle, according to police.

“We remind people to lock their car doors and to take all their valuables inside with them,” Police Lt. Kevin McKellick said Monday, adding the weekend incidents are still under investigation.
