Monroe Police: Driver may have fallen asleep before hitting a tree

MONROE, Conn. — A 36-year-old New Haven man told officers he may have fallen asleep before his 2014 Subaru Impreza crossed over double yellow line as he headed north on Judd Road, went off the left side of the road and struck a tree on June 15.

Monroe Volunteer Emergency Medical Service personnel treated him at the scene, but the driver declined a trip to a hospital, according to police.

He was issued a ticket for failure to drive in the proper lane and for driving too fast for conditions and his car was towed due to disabling damage, police said.

The accident occurred near Hattertown Road at approximately 6:31 a.m.

Fraud traced to Georgia

A Monroe man told police he received a notification from Capital One about an unauthorized $2,358 purchase on his Lowe’s credit card, according to a complaint made on June 16.

He immediately called Capital One to dispute it, the charge was removed and he canceled the card, police said, adding he will be issued a new card with a new account.

The victim later received an email from Lowe’s about the fraudulent charge with his account number, telephone number, full name and a delivery location in Forest Park, Ga.

A Monroe officer contacted the Clayton County Police Department in Georgia and was told the address is for an apartment complex in a high crime area known to be associated with other fraudulent activity, police said.

The case is still under investigation.

A two-vehicle-crash

A a 27-year-old Fairfield man was issued an infraction for failure to obey a stop sign after being involved in a two-vehicle-crash in the intersection of Monroe Turnpike and East Village Road on June 8.

At approximately 1:18 p.m., police said he was heading west on East Village Road in a 2015 Chevy Silverado, failed to properly stop at a stop sign, proceeded straight across the intersection and was struck on the rear passenger side by a 2015 Volkswagen Jetta that was heading south on Route 111.

The driver of the Jetta, an 18-year-old Sandy Hook man, was treated by Monroe EMS at the scene, but declined further medical attention, according to the report. Police said the Fairfield man was not injured.

The Volkswagen Jetta was towed due to disabling damage.
