Masuk High’s girls golf team had quite a spring, following up a South-West Conference Championship with a second-place finish in the Division II State Tournament, a repeat of last year’s success.
The Panthers finished runner-up to Berlin among 16 teams to score in the state competition, held at Trumbull’s Tashua Knolls Golf Course on Monday,
Individually, Adriana Lupo tied for first with Daniel Hand’s Millie Gobleck with a score of 79. Alex Cecchino tied for seventh a score of 88, Abby Yeager tied for 16th with a score 94 and Emma McIntyre finished in a tie for 18th with a 95. Olivia Pjetri also competed for the Panthers and finished tied for 49th with a 104.
The State Open, featuring the state’s top players across the board, took place at Mohegan Sun on Friday and Lupo tied for 8th with an 84 and Cecchino was 13th with an 87.
“The three seniors — Abby Yeager, Alex Cecchino and Emma McIntyre — had a great high school golf career which ended with back-to-back SWC Championships and back-to-back second place in state. That’s really impressive,” Masuk Coach Bob Pagel said.
“Adriana Lupo is on track to be the best golfer — boys or girls — in Masuk history,’ Pagel said of the junior standout. “She and Alex have two All State honors and Adriana will get a third next year,” Pagel said.
The future remains bright, but the three seniors will leave big shoes to fill. “I will miss this group of girls tremendously,” Pagel said.
