Masuk’s defending champion volleyball team is rebuilding

MONROE, Conn. — Coming off a South-West Conference Championship and deep state playoff run last spring, the Masuk High boys volleyball team enters the season with high hopes but an understanding there is plenty of work to be done for continued success.

“We are looking into a rebuild, as we lost 13 seniors from last year’s squad that won the SWC Tournament and made it to the state semifinals,” Coach Daniel Nyitrai said. “We believe that if we work hard every time we take the court in practice or games, that we can not only qualify for, but also do damage in the SWC and state tournaments.”

Captains, who are in the photo above from left to right, are senior libero Sanju Selvaraju, senior middle hitter Jaylen Africot, and senior setter Aiden Rodas.

Other key contributors include: Outside hitters Matt Moran (senior), Carter Given (sophomore), Jonathan Giordano (sophomore), and Daniel Cafaro (junior); setters Trey Sbrega (junior) and Finlay Oatis (sophomore); middle hitter Caleb Purdy (sophomore); right side hitters Daniel Kocan (junior) and Quinton Cottrell (sophomore); and defensive specialist Yuvraj Das.

Tough matches include SWC clashes with Joel Barlow, Pomperaug, Newtown, and Kolbe Cathedral as well as out of out-of-conference matches against Darien and Cheshire.

The season begins Saturday, April 4, when Fairfield Warde visits at 12 p.m.

“It feels great to be back and I look forward to what this season brings,” the coach said.
