Retirement party celebrates Monroe Deputy Police Chief Greg Smith’s 25-year-career

MONROE, Conn. — Greg Smith responded to burglaries, robberies, assaults, serious car crashes and major storms throughout his 25-year-career as a Monroe police officer, while mentoring younger officers, participating in community policing events and making many friends along the way. On Friday, the town’s first deputy chief finished his last shift.

Fellow police officers, town officials, family and friends celebrated his career during a retirement party in the training room of the Monroe Police Department Friday morning, sharing slices of cake and memorable stories of his service to the town.

Among the guests were Smith’s wife, Dana, son, Alec, and his daughter Meghan’s boyfriend, Conor.

“He’s very good at his job,” Dana said of her husband. “I think this reflects it. He’s always given 100 percent here and on the SWAT team.”

“He’s a great leader,” Alec said.

“He’s got more great things to do,” Dana added. “We’re all very proud of him. He always led by example.”

Though his police career is over, Smith will continue to use his law enforcement skills in his new role as director of public safety and emergency management at St. Vincent’s Medical Center, which is part of Hartford HealthCare.
