Masuk swimmers compete in state championships

Mason Eannotti and the Panthers will compete in the State Open on Saturday.

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. — Masuk High’s boys swimming and diving team is in the midst of its state competition, having competed in the Class L State Championships, which culminated with swimming events Tuesday, and gearing up for the State Open this Saturday at Yale University.

At Class M finals, held at the Cornerstone Aquatics Center in West Hartford, Masuk started off with an exciting race in the 200 Medley Relay. The team of Mason Eannotti, Aidan Cammarano, Jack McHugh and Will Hardy was fifth with a time of 1:40:76, which is a best time for this relay team. The relay qualified for the State Open.

The next event was the 200 Yard Freestyle Relay. Akkie Yerragudi was listed as an alternate and one of the swimmers in the three heats ended up scratching so the Masuk swimmer was able to compete and paced fifth in his heat with a time of 1:54:60, which is another best time.

In the 200 Yard Individual Medley, Eannotti was in an extremely exciting race with the top four swimmers, including Eannotti, all within milliseconds of each other. Eannotti placed fourth with a time of 1:57:65, another best time for a Masuk swimmer and another Open qualifier.

In the 50 Yard Freestyle, Hardy placed seventh in his heat with a time of 23:78. In the 100 Yard Freestyle, McHugh placed fourth in his heat with a time of 50:41. In the 500 Yard Freestyle, Yerragudi won his heat with a time of 5:13:31. This is a best time for the Masuk swimmer.

Masuk placed seventh in its heat of the 200 Yard Freestyle with a time of 1:32:68. This relay team finished as the seventh seed in all of Class M. The relay team consisted of McHugh, Matt Buzinaro, Hardy and Eannotti.

In the 100 Yard Backstroke, Masuk had three swimmers in the top heat. Eannotti placed second overall with a time of 52:52 a best time and Open qualifying time. Hardy placed third overall with a best time and Open qualifying time of 53:09. McHugh placed sixth in the event with an Open qualifying time of 55:68.

Cammarano placed first in his heat of the 100 Breaststroke with a time of 1:08:25. In the 400 Yard Freestyle Relay, Masuk placed seventh in its heat with a time of 3:55:34. This relay team consisted of Yerragudi, Logan Singh, Cammarano and Buzinaro.

States for diving was held March 5 in Middletown. Jake Ryan was fifth overall with 250.4 points. He will compete at State Opens this Thursday, March 12, also at Middletown High School.
