MONROE, CT — First Selectman Terry Rooney stood outside the polls with supporters at Monroe Elementary School Tuesday afternoon, a day when voters will decide whether to give the incumbent Republican a second two-year-term or to place their trust in his challenger, Leon Ambrosey, a Democrat serving on the Planning and Zoning Commission.
“I’m just happy to see all the people,” said Rooney, wearing a white “Rooney for Monroe” baseball cap with a dark suit and red necktie. “I just love doing what I’m doing and want to continue that. We’ve been good to people. Hopefully the community will keep us around.”
Earlier in the day, Ambrosey stopped by Stepney and mingled with supporters.
“It looks like we’re getting a lot of good turnout,” he said with a smile. “Most people, for the most part, have been very pleasant for both sides. It’s up to the voters now.”
As of 2 p.m., 1,809 voters went to the polls (13.45 percent). That will combined with 1,811 early voters, who already participated (3,620).
The polls will remain open until 8 p.m.
In addition to deciding the first selectman race, the Board of Education and Town Council also have contested seats.
