Monroe Police: Two crashes send drivers, one passenger to hospitals

MONROE, CT — A 26-year-old Monroe woman and her 12-year-old male passenger were hospitalized after she crashed her 2019 Nissan Rogue into a utility pole on Elm Street, in front of Good Shepherd Church, Wednesday morning.

A witness told police the Nissan was heading north when the driver veered to the right and it struck a metal guide wire, hit the utility pole and went airborne, flipping twice in the air before landing on its tires facing the opposite direction on Elm Street, according to the report.

Police said the utility pole was snapped in half in the crash and officers closed the road for several hours, while the pole was replaced.

The driver told police she was unsure exactly what had happened before the accident.

She and her passenger were evaluated by Monroe Volunteer Emergency Medical Services personnel before being taken to Bridgeport Hospital for further treatment of their injuries.

The woman was issued an infraction for failure to drive in the proper lane.

Town firefighters also responded to the emergency call, which came in around 7:45 a.m.

Two car crash on Route 34

Both drivers were hospitalized following a two-car-crash in front of Lakeside Wine & Liquor on Route 34 Thursday evening.

Police said a 61-year-old Monroe woman was exiting the parking lot in a black 2012 Honda Accord when she failed to grant the right-of-way to a blue 1999 Toyota Corolla heading east on Roosevelt Drive and struck the front end of the vehicle as it passed.

She told officers she didn’t see the Corolla as it was approaching and the other driver, a 23-year-old Oxford woman, said she was unable to avoid the collision, according to police.

Both drivers said they had injuries and were evaluated by Monroe EMS personnel. The Monroe woman was taken to St. Vincent’s Medical Center and the Oxford woman was taken to Griffin Hospital, police said.

Both vehicles were towed due to disabling damage.

The Monroe driver was issued infractions for failure to grant the right-of-way from a driveway and operating an unregistered motor vehicle.

Police said airbags were deployed in the accident, which occurred around 5:29 p.m. Firefighters also responded to the emergency call.
