‘Disturbance’ temporarily kept students indoors at Masuk, Fawn Hollow Tuesday

Masuk High School is located at 1014 Monroe Turnpike.

MONROE, CT — Principals at Masuk High and Fawn Hollow Elementary schools notified families of a safety precaution late Tuesday morning, which moved all physical education classes and recess periods indoors, after administrators had received guidance from police on a situation with “no direct impact” on the schools.

Everything returned to normal at approximately 11:45 a.m. when students could go outside again, but the incident left many parents wondering what happened.

“We had a disturbance call that briefly went mobile,” Lt. Kevin McKellick said Wednesday. “Out of an abundance of caution, we notified the schools. We quickly located the individual and learned there was no, nor was there ever, a threat and the matter was resolved in short order.”

McKellick said the call, which was not criminal in nature, occurred in a residential neighborhood that is not near any of the schools.

Superintendent Joseph Kobza said police notified his office about the disturbance at approximately 10:40 a.m.

“While there was never a direct threat to any Monroe public school, out of an abundance of caution and based on police guidance, safety measures were put in place at Fawn Hollow Elementary and Masuk High School/STEM Academy,” he said Wednesday. “Both schools moved into controlled movement, which included a period of indoor recess at Fawn Hollow.”

“We are grateful for the swift communication and support of the Monroe Police Department,” Kobza said. “The safety of our students and staff is always our top priority, and we appreciate the cooperation of our school community during this time.”
