Family awakens to burglar trying to enter their Monroe home

MONROE, CT — A family awoke to the sound of repeated slamming noises coming from their living room early Tuesday morning, as someone attempted to break into their William Henry Drive home through a bay window.

The man of the house told police he got out of bed and turned on the house lights when he heard a loud vehicle leave at a high rate of speed.

Police said officers responding to the 12:29 a.m. call saw two panels of the bay window had been open slightly to let fresh air in, and one was pulled back and sightly bent off the track.

No one in the house saw the burglar or the vehicle. Detectives were called to the scene to process it for evidence and a neighborhood canvass was conducted.

The incident is being investigated by the Monroe Police Detective Division.

A man in a silver mask

A Pebble Road man told police he stopped home for a minute and left his 2022 Lexus, so he could get something from his house Monday afternoon, when he received a notification from his Ring camera showing someone else inside his vehicle.

He described the thief as a male wearing a silver mask. Police said the suspect ran away and jumped into a silver Mazda SUV, which headed toward Farm View Road.

Police said the only thing in the Lexus was the victim’s debit card, which was missing, so he canceled it immediately.

“Earlier in the day, we received a call from Trumbull police that they had a silver SUV in their town checking car door handles as well,” said Monroe Police Lt. Kevin McKellick.

The Monroe Police Detective Division is investigating the incident.

Kia hits two mailboxes, a guardrail

A a 24-year-old Monroe man told police a deer ran in front of his 2005 Kia Sorrento as he drove west on Route 110, east of Osborn Lane, and he swerved into the east bound lane to avoid it, before his SUV went off the road, struck two mailboxes and a guardrail before coming to rest.

The driver was not injured, according to police, but he was issued a misdemeanor summons for misuse of plates, driving without insurance, driving without a license and failure to stay in proper lane.

The Kia was towed due to disabling damage. The accident occurred just before 6 a.m.

Asleep at the wheel

A 41-year-old Monroe man told officers he was drowsy from working late and fell asleep before his 2020 Toyota Corolla veered off Bug Hill Road and crashed into a utility pole around 12:20 a.m. Tuesday.

Police said the vehicle went off the road to the right when the driver was negotiating a left hand curve just east of Edgewood Road.

The driver was not injured police said. He was issued a warning for failure to drive in the proper lane.

A Subaru hits a tree

A 22-year-old Guilford man sustained minor scratches and bruising and refused medical transport after crashing into a tree with his 2022 Subaru Impreza in the 200-block of Route 34 on Aug. 1.

He was issued an infraction for failure to drive in the proper lane.

At approximately 3:20 p.m., police said he was heading west on Route 34, east of Monroe Turnpike, when he was negotiating a slight curve to the left and lost control of his Subaru, which went off the road to the right, rode up a guardrail into a wooded area and struck the tree.

The driver told officers he thought a vehicle was coming at him and swerved to the right, before losing control of his vehicle, according to the report.

However, police said a woman driving behind him did not see any oncoming vehicles before the Subaru went off the road.

The Subaru was towed due to disabling damage.
