Monroe police investigate thefts of two Audis, recover a stolen Kia Sportage

MONROE, CT — Police detectives are investigating a string of car thefts and thefts from vehicles reported over the weekend.

On Friday night, a Jenny Ridge Lane resident reported seeing someone walk down his driveway at 10:53 p.m. He thought it was a deliveryman, until he saw the person sitting inside his 2019 Audi, police said.

The suspect later took off on foot, before getting into a dark colored sedan with two others in the car. The sedan left on Jenny Ridge, heading toward Teller Road. The resident told police one of them wore a red hoodie, dark colored pants and white sneakers.

Twenty dollars cash was reported missing from his car.

Surrounding police departments were notified, but officers were unable to locate the fleeing vehicle.

Then two Audis were reported stolen on Saturday.

At 4:22 p.m., police responded to a complaint on Stanley Road. A resident told them his 2020 Audi Q5 was stolen out of his driveway approximately 10 minutes before officers were notified.

He told police he walked out to the car around 4 p.m. to retrieve something, but when he walked back about 10 minutes later, the vehicle was gone. He said the keys were inside his wife’s purse, which was in the vehicle, according to police.

While officers spoke to the resident, he received notifications on his phone from Bank of America that his credit card had been used. Officers began searching the area for the vehicle.

As they took down the report, they received another complaint about a suspicious Kia Sportage in the parking lot of Rite Aid pharmacy, 435 Main St. — just around the corner from Stanley Road.

Police said the Kia’s door handle and ignition were broken and the engine was running. New Haven police later reported it stolen.

Officers arriving on scene found several items in the parking lot that were reportedly inside the Audi when it was stolen from Stanley Road, police said.

Detectives processed the Kia, which belongs to a 55-year-old Newtown man, for evidence.

Later that night, the Fairfield Police Department notified Monroe officers that the stolen Audi was seen following another vehicle, which was just stolen in their town.

A second Audi was reported stolen from Saxony Drive in Monroe on Sunday morning.

At approximately 8:52 a.m., a New Hampshire woman visiting a friend in the neighborhood told officers she heard dogs bark earlier in the morning, looked out the window and saw two male teenagers, approximately six-feet-tall, wearing all black, exit a light gray SUV.

She said she saw them rummage around inside the homeowner’s truck, before getting into her 2021 Audi Q3, start the engine, and take off toward Meadow Brook Drive.

Police said the car was unlocked with a key inside, along with the victim’s wallet, driver’s license and credit cards.

A Swendsen Drive resident shared this photo of two suspects taken from her Ring camera in a post on the Monroe CT Residents Facebook page.

“While we were taking that complaint, a second complaint came in from a Swendsen Drive resident saying two males attempted to enter a vehicle in their driveway,” Lt. Kevin McKellick said Monday. “The suspects matched the ones involved in the Saxon Drive case.”

Later Sunday, around 12:39 p.m., officers were dispatched to an address on Jeanette Street for the report of a suspicious vehicle. The Audi Q3 stolen from Saxony Drive had been left there a few hours ago.

Police said officers found the vehicle unlocked, adding it contained the victim’s purse and driver’s license.

Similar to the Audi stolen on Stanley Road, the antenna had been pried off the roof. Police said this was apparently meant to prevent investigators from tracking the vehicles.

Detectives processed the Audi for evidence.
