MONROE, CT — Monroe offers hot meals, transportation, a tax relief program and fun activities for seniors. The Town of Monroe Information Guide for Seniors provides useful information for all of this, as well as other services and programs. Older homeowners received the guide in the mail with their tax bills.
Susan Bannay, chair of the Monroe Commission for the Aging, said the information guide is a helpful way to get the word out about the services offered to seniors in town. “We hope that folks will take advantage of them,” Bannay said.
The commission created the pamphlet on June 7, 2023 and it was revised on August 13, 2024. Those who did not receive it or lost their copy can download a pdf file by clicking here.
“The brochure was created to showcase various programs and services available for our seniors, Cassia said. “Many people don’t know we have a Senior Center in town that offers a variety of activities, lectures, games, classes, transportation and more.”
She said the center has a “congregate meal” that was recently increased to twice a week, offering a nutritious meal while socializing with friends — old and new.
One section of the pamphlet highlights the role of the Elderly Services coordinator and the assistance she can offer to seniors or their loved ones.
“Oftentimes people have questions on issues affecting their seniors’ loved ones and don’t know where to turn,” Cassia said. “This brochure helps to answer some of those questions.”
She said the town has a homebound book program organized by Edith Wheeler Memorial Library with the books delivered by the Monroe Senior Center’s drivers.
“Lastly, the brochure lists the items one may be eligible for in conjunction with the Senior Tax Relief program,” Cassia said.

Great job by the commission on the aging. But it’s a start. The tax relief program needs to be expanded with new concepts such as anyone living in Monrie for oo30 plus years, age 68 or older needs to be released from board of Ed taxes and certainly car taxes.
