MONROE, CT — A 34-year-old Greenwich man was working on an excavator in the O’Reilly Auto Parts parking lot on Monroe Turnpike Tuesday afternoon, when he swung the bucket, accidentally striking a guide wire that was connected to a utility pole.
Police said the impact damaged transformers attached to the pole, knocking out power and causing fluid to leak onto the ground down below. Eversource and Frontier were notified of the incident, which occurred around 1:20 p.m.
The Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection was also notified due to the fluid leak.
Police said nobody was hurt. Officers closed off one lane of traffic in the southbound lane, until the matter was cleared up, reopening the lane by 4:15 p.m.
Woman hospitalized after two-vehicle-crash
A 52-year-old Monroe woman was tended to by Monroe Volunteer Emergency Medical Service personnel and taken to Bridgeport Hospital for further treatment after being involved in a two-vehicle crash on Fan Hill Road, near Village Green Lane, Wednesday morning.
Police said she was heading south in a 2014 Hyundai Elantra, when she was struck by a 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee that crossed into her lane while coming from the other direction.
The driver of the Jeep, a 35-year-old Hamden man, admitted to “going a little too fast” when he was negotiating a sharp curve in the road, before crossing the double yellow lines and hitting the Elantra, according to police.
After the impact, the Jeep drove off the road to the right and collided with several bushes and a tree, before coming to final rest, the report said.
Both vehicles were towed due to disabling damage.
Police said the Hamden man was not hurt and he was issued an infraction for traveling too fast and failure to drive in the proper lane.
Town firefighters also responded to the accident, which occurred just before 7 a.m.
