Monroe Police Reports: DUI arrest after April crash, wild animal attacks pet

MONROE, CT — A 38-year-old Monroe woman’s blood alcohol level was nearly five times the legal limit when she crashed her Toyota Scion into the back of a Tesla Model 3 in the intersection of routes 25 and 59 on April 12, according to police.

No injuries were reported, but the driver was unconscious behind the wheel with airbags deployed and the engine still running, police said, adding officers broke a window of the Toyota to gain access to the driver, because the car was still in drive.

Police said the strong odor of an alcoholic beverage was coming from the driver and, when she began to wake up, she couldn’t answer basic questions.

Monroe Volunteer Emergency Medical Service personnel evaluated the driver at the scene before taking her to St. Vincent’s Medical Center due to her condition. Police applied for and obtained a search warrant and found the driver’s blood alcohol level was nearly five times the legal limit, according to the report.

She turned herself in on a warrant Tuesday, charging her with DUI, failure to drive in the proper lane and following too closely. She was released after posting seven percent of $10,000 bond for a May 14 court date.

Pet lost to wild animal attack

An 85-year-old Harvester Road woman lost one of her two small dogs, which were terrier mixes, after it was attacked by a wild animal late at night on May 1.

While driving her pet to an animal hospital, she crashed her 2019 Honda CRV on Fan Hill Road, according to police.

She reportedly told officers that her uninjured dog jumped on her, obstructing her view, before she drove off the road and struck about 60 feet of fencing. Her vehicle came to rest on someone’s front lawn in the 300-block of Fan Hill Road.

The accident occurred at approximately 11:28 p.m. Police issued the driver a warning for failure to drive in the proper lane.

Due to heavy front-end damage, her vehicle was towed from the scene. A family member took the injured pet to the animal hospital, but it succumbed to its injuries.

The woman’s daughter called Monroe Animal Control the next day, on May 2, to report the attack on her mother’s dog.

On May 1, her mother let her dogs out to go to the bathroom in her yard, which has an electric dog fence. She later heard one dog barking frantically and ran outside to find the other dog had been attacked and was severely injured, according to police.

She gathered up the dogs and attempted to take the injured one to an animal hospital for emergency care before the crash on Fan Hill Road.

The daughter suspects it may have been a coyote that attacked the dog. An animal control officer went out to the property to see if there was any evidence of a coyote den in the area, but was unable to find anything, police said.

Interfering with an officer

Police responded to a domestic incident between a couple on Lynn Drive on May 3, determined it was only verbal, and were about to leave, when the man, who was heavily intoxicated, began to threaten one of the officers, according to police.

At one point, the situation became physical. Other officers gave multiple verbal commands, but the man allegedly ignored them and refused to let go of the officer he had allegedly threatened, the report said. Police said he was eventually taken down to the ground, handcuffed and arrested.

Police said the officer was okay. The resident was charged with interfering with an officer and released on $2,500 bond for a May 12 court date.

The incident occurred around 4:10 p.m.

Crash at the dam

An 18-year-old Danbury woman, heading west on Route 34 in her 2006 Honda CRV on May 4, crashed into a concrete wall, after failing to negotiate a curve going onto Stevenson Dam around 3:11 a.m.

The vehicle came to rest in the west bound lane and had to be towed due to disabling damage, the report said.

After being treated at the scene, a passenger in the vehicle, another 18-year-old woman from Danbury, was taken to Bridgeport Hospital by Monroe EMS personnel for further evaluation.

The driver was issued an infraction for traveling too fast for conditions.

Mail truck hits water main

A U.S. Postal Service mail truck struck a water main near community mailboxes at The Ridge on Legacy Lane, causing a large amount of water to spill onto the property on May 3.

Police said nobody was injured and the property manager was notified about the damage.

At approximately 1:38 p.m., the 68-year-old mail carrier, who is from Shelton, stopped at the mailboxes, before he accelerated, failing to follow the curve and going straight off the road and hitting the water main, police said.

Crash in the roundabout

A 55-year-old Darien woman told police two deer jumped in front of her 2019 Nissan Rogue as she headed west on Route 110 May 2, so she swerved to avoid a collision, went over the curb and struck a pedestrian crossing sign in the roundabout of the intersection with Route 111.

The driver was issued an infraction for failure to drive in the proper lane.

The accident occurred around 6:05 a.m.
