Monroe man banned from Stop & Shop following altercation

MONROE, CT — An 89-year-old Monroe man was banned from the Stop & Shop supermarket at 470 Monroe Turnpike after he allegedly pushed an 18-year-old store employee, while arguing with her on March 12.

He was issued a misdemeanor summons for breach of peace and released on a promise to appear in court on April 1.

Officers were called to the supermarket around 5:20 p.m. on March 12.

Prior to their arrival, the customer approached the employee, while she was working and asked her where the bread crumbs were. She said she thought it was in aisle five.

The man thanked her, but when she did not answer him, police said he stood right next to her and yelled, “thank you” loudly at her two times.

When he went down aisle five and did not find the bread crumbs, police said he became upset, so the employee told him to go to the service counter for assistance.

When the employee later approached the service desk, police said the man was still there and allegedly began to berate her, saying he was not there to talk to her. He allegedly pushed her and got in her face, according to police.

This altercation reportedly took place in front of few customers. Police said several intervened and calmed the situation, while someone called 911.

Forgot to shift to park

A 39-year-old Bridgeport woman was issued a verbal warning for leaving a motor vehicle without setting the brake Thursday evening, after she forgot to shift her white Ford Maverick pickup truck into park, while pumping gas at Noble gas station, 195 Monroe Turnpike.

Police said the truck rolled back and hit a retailing wall, causing an estimated $3,000 worth of damage.

The driver was reportedly struck by the vehicle when it rolled back and left the scene to seek medical treatment.

The incident occurred around 5:30 p.m. The employee on the night shift told the manager, who reported it to police the following morning.

Officers contacted the woman, who they said confirmed the manager’s version of events. Her insurance information was relayed to the manager of Noble Gas.

A surprise package arrives

A 70-year-old Greenwood Drive resident told police he received a package from Verizon, containing a wireless internet router he did not order, according to a fraud complaint filed Friday.

He contacted Verizon directly and learned the phone number associated with the delivery was not his, police said, adding the man filed a fraud complaint with phone company and returned the router.

He then filed the police report and is currently not out any money. Verizon canceled account and police advised the victim to notify the three major credit bureaus.
