MONROE, CT — Town Democrats’ primary results for Connecticut’s 22nd Senatorial District seat mirrored that of the state with Quinnipiac Law School professor Sujata Gadkar-Wilcox locking up the nomination to run against Republican Christopher Carrena.
But Monroe Republicans favored the two candidates who lost their primaries for the right to challenge Congressman Jim Himes, D-4th, and U.S. Sen. Christopher Murphy, according to Tuesday’s unofficial results released by the Monroe Registrars of Voters Office.
Navy veteran Matthew Cory beat Beacon Falls First Selectman Gerry Smith for the right to face Murphy. But in Monroe, Smith won 163 to 135.
Monroe Republicans also favored Bob MacGuffie, a Tea Party Republican and author, over Michael Goldstein, a retired ophthalmologist and surgeon, by a vote of 171 to 129. But Goldstein won overall in the state and will face off against Himes this November.
Monroe’s Republican Primary had 8.74 percent voter turnout.
In Monroe’s Democratic Party Primary voter turnout was 17.14 percent.
According to the unofficial results Sujata Gadkar-Wilcox won with 96 votes and former Bridgeport Mayor Bill Finch, who once held the seat in 22nd, came in second with 56 votes. Tyler Mack finished third with 19 votes and Scott Burns had 9 votes.
The 22nd Senatorial District seat became available following the retirement of longtime legislator Marilyn Moore.
