Editor’s Note: The following story was written by Stepney Elementary School Principal Ashley Furnari.
An education scholarship was established in 2021 to honor the memory of Bruce Lazar, a beloved educator in the Monroe community. Mr. Lazar, who passed away in 2021, was not only a dedicated husband and father but also a highly respected teacher and school administrator who positively impacted many lives through his commitment to Monroe’s public schools and the Monroe Community.
Mr. Lazar’s educational career in Monroe began at Fawn Hollow Elementary School before he become principal of Chalk Hill Middle School. He also provided leadership at Jockey Hollow Middle School and Sandy Hook Elementary, offering stability and guidance during challenging times.
His passion for education and children was evident during his time as the principal of Stepney Elementary School, where his hands-on approach was well-known and appreciated by all, leaving a lasting impact on the school community.
In addition to his contributions to education, Bruce Lazar was a dedicated coach, instilling values of fair play and teamwork through sports to his children and many others in Monroe. The scholarship established in his honor aims to support aspiring educators who share his passion for teaching and making a positive impact on students’ lives.
This year, Monroe Public Schools came together to honor Mr. Lazar, a baseball fan and supporter of the New York Yankees. On March 28, staff and students proudly wore their favorite jerseys for Opening Day of the baseball season to remember Mr. Lazar.
As part of Jersey Day, the MPS community raised over $3,500 to support and grow the Bruce Lazar Memorial Scholarship. This community effort exemplifies what makes Monroe a special place to live, learn, and grow.
