SUFFIELD, CT — A 3-0 road win against undefeated Suffield High School allowed the underdog Masuk boys soccer team to advance to the semifinals of the CIAC Tournament Saturday .
Suffield was ranked 5th and had a 13-0-3 record going into the game. Masuk goalie, Connor Kehlenbach was instrumental in shutting down Suffield’s offense, while helping a Masuk defense that shutout its last two opponents.
“My leaders stepped up. My bench stepped up. It was a complete game,” said Masuk Coach Brendan Cavanaugh. “I am extremely proud of my team. After two previous years of advancing to the quarterfinals and losing, winning this game and making it to the state semifinal is huge for our team and program. I’m so happy for the boys!”
The 13th ranked Panthers will face Notre Dame of West Haven at Bunnell High School this Wednesday at 6 p.m.
Masuk set the tone early against Suffield, when Owen Correll beat the last defender, before kicking the ball into the net with 31 minutes to play in the first half.
Masuk defenders kept Suffield’s aggressive offense at bay, rendering them scoreless to protect a 1-0 lead at halftime.
The Panthers added to their lead 11 minutes into the second half when Kasper Murzinski assisted Correll with his second goal of the afternoon, putting Masuk up 2-0.
Murzinski scored a goal with an assist from Cash Dewey with 23 minutes left in regulation, putting the finishing touches on Masuk’s 3-0 victory.
