Update: Canine search of Masuk yields no weapons

Masuk High School is located at 1014 Monroe Turnpike.

MONROE, CT — Police investigated a report of a student bringing a gun to Masuk High School Thursday morning and did not find a gun. In a follow up communication, Superintendent Joseph Kobza told parents a canine was used in a secondary search conducted by officers and school staff, which also yielded no weapons.

When the alleged threat was isolated and secure, Kobza said the high school transitioned to a “controlled movement/stay put” status until the completion of the search.

“This allowed students to be escorted to the bathrooms if necessary,” he said. “Additionally, students entering campus were allowed into the building through the main entrance and directed into the cafeteria under supervision of school security and Monroe Police officers.”

After a thorough search, Kobza said the school was determined to be safe. The building was taken out of “stay put” status at 9:45 a.m. and normal school activities resumed shortly thereafter.

“I want to thank everyone for their cooperation and understanding during this incident,” Kobza said. “I especially want to recognize our students and staff for their calm response, as well as the Monroe Police Department for their swift and thorough efforts to ensure the safety of our school community.”

“Please know that we are committed to maintaining a secure environment for all students and staff,” he said. “We will continue to take any necessary precautions and work closely with law enforcement to address any concerns promptly and effectively.”

The superintendent told parents they can call his office with any further questions or for more information.
